We chose to spotlight Mayfair East Member, George Fischer because of his huge contributions to develop tennis in Canada. George has been a Mayfair Clubs member since 1989 – that’s almost three decades that he’s been playing on our courts! He has been our Title Sponsor for our Mayfair Toronto Pro League for the past 3 years in a row and he is a big supporter of our programming.
George is also a very talented photographer. He specializes in landscape and cultural photography for tourism boards, companies, and art collectors across the globe. You might see some of his images displayed at our Parkway and Lakeshore bistros.
We asked him to answer a couple questions about his Photography and his involvement in the Mayfair Toronto Pro League.
Are you a tennis player yourself?
Yes, I have been playing tennis since I was a teenager growing up in Montreal. I am 67 years old now and I still am playing almost every day with my friends at Mayfair Parkway and East.
Tell us a bit about George Fischer Photography?
I have been a photographer for the past 40 years and have produced over 70 photographic books for my publishers in Canada. I do mainly landscape photography for these books and have travelled extensively around the globe. Some of my books include Canada, Iceland, Italy, France, Cuba, Malta, Israël and Jordan. My three biggest passions in life are Tennis, Photography and Cycling. I love the outdoors and nature and I am happiest when I am doing these activities.
How and why did you get involved as a sponsor of the Mayfair Toronto Pro League (MTPL)?
I got involved with the MPTL about 5 years ago when Sandra Barrett and Ed Flanigan asked me to sponsor a new league for professional players to be held at Mayfair Lakeshore. The reason I got involved was mainly to help kick start a new program where some of the top players in Ontario could showcase their tennis skills, make a little prize money while tennis lovers, at the same time, could enjoy the high level matches up close.
Is it a good partnership with Mayfair?
My partnership with Mayfair Clubs has been excellent. I get to showcase my books and prints to a large audience. During all of the MTPL events, my books are showcased and given out as door prize gifts. I have received many orders for prints as well as for books. I enjoy being at my booth autographing the books and watching the tennis and chatting with friends.
Does it feel like your commitment is giving back to the sport?
I do. I believe in Tennis and the health benefits of tennis both physically and psychologically. I have donated 1 million dollars to Tennis Canada to sponsor the Fischer Junior Nationals for 20 years as well as $250,000 over 5 years to support up and coming young players by providing players with a $10,000 award to cover expenses of travel and coaching. Tennis is a great sport that teaches life skills that are beneficial to young kids. I have learned first-hand the benefits of tennis in my own life by helping me through some very difficult moments in my life. That is why I am a big supporter of Tennis in Canada. Along with the physical and mental there is the social aspects of the sport that is so important especially as we age.
What do you think of the calibre of play in the league?
The calibre of the league is incredibly high with very entertaining matches. The atmosphere is electric, and everyone is cheering for their teams and for the amazing points. We can also drink and eat on the court which is a bonus, and the seats can’t get any better as they are right down on court side.
